PHCRED Bursaries |
|
|
Each year, the Centre for Remote Health offers small bursaries (up to $5,000) to enable those working or involved in rural and remote primary health care in the Northern Territory to conduct research/evaluation and to disseminate findings. Early researchers are strongly encouraged to apply.
The bursary money can be used in different ways, for example to:
- prepare a research proposal to submit for a larger competitive grant
- to pay for a literature search
- to conduct a small research or evaluation project
- to collect or analyse data
- to fund 'time replacement' while doing research
- help in writing up or disseminating research findings
- contribute towards the costs of course or conference attendance (as part of a research program, or to disseminate research findings).
General practitioners, private health practitioners, nurses or other health professionals associated with a health care service, Aboriginal Health Workers, health care consumers or communities concerned about a primary health care issue are eligible to apply.
Bursaries are advertised near the beginning of each calendar year. More detailed information about the bursary scheme is posted at this time.

| Kathleen Mary Bulbrook |

Central Australian Mental Health Service |
Example of 2010 bursary project
Fiona Owens is creating a database of suicide attempts by children and young people. Creation of the database will involve raising awareness of child suicide attempts and self-harm in primary health care services in remote communities. This should improve communication mechanisms with the health professional in these services so that a more accurate understanding of the extent and nature of this behaviour can be obtained. It is hoped that the recommendations that fall-out from the data collection will enable services to better respond to this disturbing behaviour by Children in Central Australian Remote Areas.
