Doctors in remote Australia work within a range of specialities and models of health service delivery. In primary health care, remote medical practitioners (RMPs) and specialists are an integral part of the team either locally or remotely located in a regional centre. RMPs and specialists undertake outreach clinics; provide tele-health consultations, case review, clinical advice, professional support and for some, emergency retrieval services. Like their remote area nurse and allied health colleagues, they do this in small teams where strong underpinnings of primary health care, public health, advanced and collaborative practice are critical elements to the discipline of remote practice.
